Welcome to Mountain Sun Community School!

Mountain Sun Community School in Brevard is a non-profit, independent, private school serving children in preschool through 6th grade and will soon be expanding into the middle school years. At Mountain Sun, we believe in holistic education that nurtures the child’s mind, body, and inner spirit. We offer a quality education that is inclusive of all ethnic, religious, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Our quality education begins with inspired teachers, a spirit of community, the child’s sense of wonder and natural curiosity, a challenging, experiential education in and out of the classroom, and connection to the natural world.

Our school nurtures each student’s individual learning style, fosters creative thinking, and enhances the child’s ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and thus prepares them for an ever-changing world. Through our multi-age classrooms and our independent work periods students develop a true sense of ownership and responsibility for their learning, and in turn their passion for learning is celebrated and nurtured. Our success lies in our students’ freedom and ability to be active participants in their academic growth and their whole learning process versus being passive recipients of knowledge.

In addition to providing a solid academic and cognitive foundation for our young learners, students also actively engage in peaceful conflict resolution, in community service activities, Art, Music, and Spanish classes, exploration of the natural world, and outdoor education where students face both physical and mental challenges. By integrating these opportunities into the learning environment we can best serve our students whole development – cognitively, emotionally, socially, physically, and interpersonally.

We believe it is human nature to find learning and the application of what is being learned deeply satisfying. The pursuit of knowledge can be self-revealing. The natural discovery of what one knows leads you down a path for further knowledge and discovery of one’s interests and passions, and hence a sense of purpose and self-esteem arises. Beginning a child’s educational journey with this understanding and direction is foundational to our School’s mission.
